Powder Sambar

Ingredients
1. Toor dhal ... 1 cup
2. Small Onions ... 100 Gms
3. Tomatoes ... 4 nos
4. Green chilies ... 2 nos
5. Tamarind ... Lemon (small) size
6. Turmeric powder ... 1/4 tsp
7. Hing (asafoetida) powder ... 1/2 tsp
8. Salt ... to taste
9.Jaggery (small goosberry size) ... a little
For powder:
10. Red chillies ... 8 nos
11. Bengal gram ... 1 tablespoon
12. Dhaniya (coriander seeds) ... 1 1/2 tablespoon
13. Fenugreek ... 1 tsp
14. Grated coconut ... 1 tsp
For seasoning:
15. Mustard ... 1 tsp
16. Urad dhal (broken) ... 1 tsp
17. Oil ... 1 tablespoon
18. Ghee ... 1/2 tablespoon
19. Curry leaves ... 1 stalk
20. Coriander leaves ... 1 stalk

 

Method:

  1. Add 3 cups of water to toot dhal and add turmeric powder and cook it nicely.
  2. Dissolve tamarind in 2 1/2 cups of water and filter it and add the chopped tomatoes, longitudinally split green chillies hing powder, and curry leaves and boil it.
  3. Add the dhal after the raw smell of the above goes off.
  4. Fry the ingredients for the powder with a little oil and powder it in a mixie. and add this powder to the above
  5. Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard and after it splatters, add urad dhal and onion (whole) and saute till golden brown.
  6. Add this to the boiling sambar and keep it for another 10 minutes.
  7. Garnish it with curry leaves and coriander leaves.
